Move Along: Nothing To See Here
Everything interesting is happening over on my Tumblr, Magic Schoolbus, and that’s no accident.
I haven’t posted any updates to my DaveRiordan blog since early January (there are about 7 others sitting in various levels of draft form and will likely never see the light of day). When I initially started writing online several years ago, on sites which I’ve since taken down because I found my writing quality to be poor in retrospect, I wanted to create a single site that brought together all my online content and collections (links, videos, music). On one hand, social aggregators like FriendFeed and SocialThing, have stepped in to fill that need, but only partially.
However, Tumblr has truly filled the void in my digital life that I’d originally set out to create on every public blogging platform I’ve previously used*. Tumblr lets everyone be a Waxy or a Fimoculous, which solves my functional problems that I’ve been trying to implement (for an hour or two at a time every six months) for the past few years letting me share content really easily of any format.
But what it doesn’t solve is the problem of writing valuable content. Sure sharing other people’s stuff and making snarky comments is fun and easy, but regularly writing and subsequently publishing my own content has always been the challenge, and one I haven’t kept up with. So while Tumblr might be great for sharing the short stuff (and pretty good at sharing longer writings), it can’t solve the fundamental problem of inducing substantial individual contribution. Sometimes it’s good to have thoughts that aren’t too short for a blog post.
Oh and this totally marks a return to writing on DaveRiordan.com, so you and my Tumblog can totes coexist!
*Tumblr PR Team: Feel free to lift this line extensively.
